What is the Metaverse?

Everybody is talking about the Metaverse. Simply put, a Metaverse is a digital space represented by digital representations of people, places, and things. In other words, it’s a “digital world” with real people represented by digital objects.

Since 1992, when author Neal Stephenson was credited with coining the term “metaverse” in his science fiction novel “Snow Crash, various developments have made mileposts on the way toward a real metaverse, an online virtual world that incorporates augmented reality, virtual reality, 3D holographic avatars, video and other means of communication. As the metaverse expands, it will offer a hyper-real alternative world for you to coexist in.

Press in the Metaverse

Recently, we were wondering of how the traditional press, such as magazines, or newspapers would look like in the Metaverse. 

Traditional, or old media include radio, broadcast television, cable and satellite, print, and billboards. These are the forms of advertising that have been around for years, and many have had success with traditional media campaigns.

New media can best be described as digital channels that have gained popularity in the advertising space in the last decade or so. As more and more consumers rely on their cell phones for everything, new media has become an increasingly effective way to advertise. 

Meta media could be virtual spaces into the Metaverse, where companies demonstrate their product or services. Meta magazines and meta newspapers would not include articles, but immersive experiences. Imagine a home design magazine that takes readers inside luxury homes via virtual reality tours. Or, imagine a sports magazine that can put readers courtside at virtual games and matches. In this new universe, the Metaverse will feel alive once ‘storytelling’ becomes ‘storyliving’.
